ASD history

A Labrador/Poodle cross puppy "labradoodle" was bred by the Guide Dog Association Victoria (“GDAV”) for a near blind woman in Hawaii whose husband suffered from allergies. One pup from the first litter, named Sultan proved to have an allergy friendly coat and was suitable to be a guide dog. It is thought that the GDAV thought of the name "labradoodle".

A gentleman by the name of Don Evans, who had also been crossing Standard Poodles with field trial Labrador Retrievers in Northern Victoria, Australia, supplied breeding stock to 2 breeding centers in Victoria – Tegan Park and Rutland Manor. These centers bred Labradoodle to Labradoodle and experimented by introducing other pedigree breeds (including american cocker spaniel, english cocker, irish water spaniel and more recently irish wheaten terrier) into the blend and so, a new breed evolved. Their vision was inspirational. There are now dedicated Australian Multi-Generational Labradoodle breeders, owners and lovers all over the world.

A few years ago Rutland Manor and Tegan Park re-named their labradoodles as " Australian Service Dogs" (ASDs) to differentiate them from Labrador/Poodle hybrids.

Decades on, the 3+ breed Australian Labradoodle puppies are very distinct in appearance and nature. Careful and thoughtful breeding consistently produces labradoodle pups which are intelligent, loving, intuitive in nature and bouncing in life. Very much linked to its origins, Australian Labradoodles are being used as therapy and assistance dogs and are being recognised internationally as an ideal pet and companion by families.

British Labradoodles are 2 breed mixes crossing a Labrador/Poodle (called First Generation "F1"). Some subsequently mate these F1 Labradoodles to poodles or labradoodles. Each cross increases the generation TO THE LOWER GENERATION PARENT (F2, F3. F4, F5, F6.....) until they become Multi-Gen Labradoodles A1, A2, A3...)

Australian Labradoodles are 3+ breed dog (Labrador, Poodle and at least one other permitted pedigree breed).

An Australian Service Dog means that the Australian Labradoodle is from the co-founders Rutland Manor and Tegan Park (RM/TP). Click 100% RM/TP in the gallery to see which are directly from the co-founder lines. 1-99% RM/TP means that another line has been mixed in, usually poodle (which is a permitted infusion), but occasionally british labradoodle or low-gen australian labradoodle.
